Reliance Jio’s Historic Digital Launch

Reliance Jio launched its 4G services for its employees at a mega event held at Reliance Corporate Park at Navi Mumbai. It now offers its high-speed seamless services to the employees of Reliance Industries.

Launch Event

The launch event for the employees was one of the largest and first of its kind in the country. The event was on 27th December, which is also the eve of Reliance Industries’ Founder Chairman Dhirubhai Ambani’s 83rd birth anniversary. The services to the employees started from 28th December.

Around 35,000 people attended the event. Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan and music director A. R. Rahman were the special guests at the event. Apart from its staff, Reliance Industries will offer its services to its business partners, and families of the employees all across the country. Reliance Jio will focus on more than a lakh users with its motto ‘One India. One RIL. One Jio.’

The company is leaving no stone unturnedto provide flawless services to the consumers at the time of its commercial launch. It is making optimum utilization of human resources to ensure that the digital services are of the highest quality.

Uniting the employees

Reliance Industries has employees originating from different walks of life. This digital launch will be a common string between all and bind them together. All the employees were invited for the event and they will be offered the same services. The launch acted as a great leveler.

Usually, digital events only see the people involved and top executives of the corporates attending the event. But, for the first time in the corporate world, a company invited and involved all of its employees in the digital townhall. The conventional projects, old Reliance, business-to-business ventures partnered with New Reliance and its consumer-centric businesses, all sharing a common digital life.

The event was live streamed so that all the employees of Reliance Industries participate in it. 1.5 lakh people from more than 1100 places across India were watching the event. One of them was also internationally tuned from Dallas, Texas in the United States (US). Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani interacted with them through two-way video conferencing.

Plans of Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio aims to get around 10 crore customers for its 4G venture in the Financial Year (FY) 2016 – 2017.

Chairman Ambani said at the event that, “Jio is not about technical brute force but to reimagine how to do things better. Jio is not about Reliance, it is about India and when it comes to India I am an eternal optimist.”

His wife Nita Ambani said that Reliance Jio will establish a digital ecosystem that will gear up the future generations for the world. She said that Reliance will offer health and educational services in India through the medium of Reliance Jio. It will also help to lessen the gap between rural India and urban India.

Impact on the Stocks

On 28th December, a total of 291670 Reliance Industries’ shares were traded in 7068 trades with a net turnover of INR 294207323.

Reliance Jio Launches Wi-Fi Services at 160 Locations

Reliance JioInfocomm, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries is all set to make a soft launch of its services for employees by December end. It has now rolled out 4G Wi-Fi services in 160 places across India.

Reliance Jio’s Wi-Fi Network

Last Sunday, the MukeshAmbani-led company started the rollout of its high-speed Jionet service from Jammu. It has already launched services in a number of cities, including Ahmedabad, Indore, Surat, Mumbai, Lucknow, Kolkata, Mussoorie, and Bhubaneshwar.

The service is provided free of cost to employees. The deployment at varied locations helps the company test its services before the official launch. It wants to give consumers a flawless experience once it begins the commercial rollout.

An official from the company revealed that Reliance Jio’s high-speed network works seamlessly and offers speeds between 10 Megabits per second (Mbps) and 40 Mbps.

Anyone with a smart phone near a Wi-Fi hotspot may connect to the network. Users will have to turn on their Wi-Fi on handsets and choose the Jionet network. After connecting to the network a login page will open. The user may also enter ‘jionet.jio.in’ on his browser to open the page. The user will then have to register on the network with his mobile number. A verification number will be sent to the registered mobile number. By entering this number, the user will be allowed to use the network.

Users will beautomatically logged out if there is no activity on their individual network for half an hour. Users will then have to enter the verification code again, which is valid for another 24 hours. After 24 hours, the user will need to login again and obtain a new verification code.

Reliance Jio’s Soft Launch

Reliance Jio will make these services available to Reliance Industries’ employees on 27th December to commemorate the eve of its founder,DhirubhaiAmbani’s birth anniversary. An invitation letter to employees from Chairman MukeshAmbani and wife Nita Ambani said, “We are happy to share that we will unveil Jio to our colleagues first, on the eve of our Founder Chairman’s birth anniversary.”

The launch event will see eminent personalities like Shah Rukh Khan and A.R. Rahman. The company will make every employee participate by live streaming the event to 1,000 locations across the country.

Reliance Jio’s Service

Reliance Jio will launch its commercial services in the first quarter of the Financial Year (FY) 2016 – 2017. The company has the largest amount of liberalized spectrum among all other telecom operators. The spectrum may be used for providing any technology for mobile services. In all, Reliance Jio has 751.1 MHz spectrum in the bands of 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz.

Recently,Credit Suisse, a brokerage company, conducted speed tests of the Reliance Jio network. The resultsrevealed that the 4G network gave a download speed between 15 Mbps and 30 Mbps and peaked at 70 Mbps.

Reliance Jio Network Peaks at 70 Mbps

Brokerage firm, Credit Suisse conducted speed tests on Reliance Jio’s 4G network. According to the field trial reports, the download speed reached as high as 70 Mbps during the beta test phase.

The telecom venture of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, Reliance Jio Infocomm will be rolling out its 4G services in December itself. The newcomer is using Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) technology.

Statements of the Report

For most of the time, Reliance Jio network gave a speed between 15 Mbps and 30 Mbps. This was constant even on the move. While these speeds are impressive, Reliance Jio’s coverage was also found to be quite impressive, especially in urban areas.

At a speed of around 15 Mbps to 30 Mbps, a movie can be downloaded in less than 3 minutes, while at 70 Mbps, this may be done in around 30 seconds.

The report also compared network speeds with other service providers and Reliance Jio 4G speeds were consistently higher. Analysts also report that the Reliance Jio network was call drop-free, during trials in Mumbai. They said that phone calls were made seamlessly, between Reliance Jio VoLTE network and other telecom operators.

The report stated that “Reliance Jio network is turning out to be as strong a threat to incumbent.” It offers a strong voice quality. The report also said that the company’s next focus will be on pricing and marketing execution.

Reliance Jio recently initiated beta tests by offering connections to the company’s employees. The company is looking for a VoLTE-based launch.

VoLTE technology will enable voice calls over 4G LTE network instead of 2G or 3G network. LTE technology lets operators to offer high-speed broadband service. The report said that the Reliance Jio’s network will be further enhanced when it makes the switch to 850 MHz band. Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has already partnered with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications for spectrum sharing. Reliance Jio will roll out its 4G services on Reliance Communications’ 850 MHz band.

As per the tests, Reliance Jio network offered good call quality, even while traveling on highways. While driving at a speed of 80 kmph, a 5-min call was made smoothly, without any call drop.

Credit Suisse conducted network tests at various locations, including malls, railway stations, public places, highways, and offices. The report said that the network provided strong signal strength outdoors.

Reliance Jio Strategy

Reliance Jio has adopted an innovative technology of small cells. Small cell is much smaller than the traditional mobile towers. It looks like a Wi-Fi router. With this technology, Reliance Jio will be able to achieve blanket coverage, as these small cells may be deployed in every nook and corner.

These compact boxes look elegant as well. They may be fitted on rooftops, lampposts, lifts, staircases, and other locations. The outdoor unit provides coverage of 2 kilometers, while the indoor unit provides coverage of 500 meters.

Reliance Jio orders First Tranche of 4G VoLTE Smart Phones

Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm has placed an order for 4G smart phones. As the first part of the order, the pan-India 4G operator will acquire20 million smart phones from mobile vendors and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) for its LYF brand.

Reliance Jio Smart Phones

Reliance Jio’s LYF brand smart phones are created to offer world-class user experience through 4G services. In addition to being 4G-enabled, Reliance Jio smart phones will have features like Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), High-Definition (HD) Voice, Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi), and HD Video Calling. These are aimed to offer a new digital life experience to the customers.

VoLTEwill allow Reliance Jio to manage voice calls over LTE networks. The calls will thus be supported with HD voice clarity and enhanced call connectivity. VoWi-Fi will let the calls to be switched from mobile network to Wi-Fi. This will help users in areas where there is a weak cellular coverage.

Industry experts predict that after 4G, VoLTE is set to be the next big revolution in the Indian smartphone market. Currently, only 2% of smart phones are VoLTE- enabled or upgradable. But, these figures are bound to shoot up in a couple of years. The benefits offered by VoLTE will increase its demand in the market, while prices will come down with the increase in sales.

Reliance Retail’s Partnerships

Reliance Retail has partnered with a number of smart phone manufacturers, including LG, Lenovo, YU, Micromax, Apple, and ZTE, among others. These companies will be making 4G LTE smartphones for Reliance Jio.

LG has already launched two 4G LTE smartphones in India. These are LG Spirit LTE and LG G4 Stylus 4G,both having VoLTEand VoWi-Fi capabilities. Additionally, Lenovo has launched its Vibe Shot, which is also a 4G LTE model.

YU Televenturesrecently announced that it will be launching VoLTE phones like YUPHORIA, YUNIQUE,and YUREKA Plus under its partnership with Reliance Retail. These phones will help enhance the distribution network of Reliance Retail across the country. These three phones will be available at attractive prices of INR 7,999, INR6,499 and INR 10,999 respectively.

Reliance Retail has also signed deals with ODMs,Coolpad, CKT, and others for LYF 4G smart phones. Coolpad, being one of the biggest 4G smartphone manufacturing companies in China, is constantly workingto strengthen its entire mobile technology ecosystem and empower people.

Reliance Retail stores and Reliance Digital stores will sell the LYF and other brand smartphones to people. These phones will be available across the country. Reliance Retail has 2,857 outlets accounting for a retail footprint of more than 12.8 million square feet in 250 cities of India. On the other hand, Reliance Digital runs 1,379 stores from 225 cities of the country.

Reliance Jio is planning a soft launch of its services this month. After the launch, Reliance Jio will take a few days to make operator’s SIM cards available in stores. The company revealed that consumers can expect connections from January 2016.

Reliance Jio to launch Jio Money by Mid-December

The telecom arm of Reliance Industries, Reliance Jio Infocomm is set to roll out its digital wallet service in mid-December.

Jio Money Digital Wallet Service

The Mukesh Ambani-led company introduced its digital wallet service recently, at the eIndia Summit, held in Mumbai. The company revealed that Jio Money is supported with 4G small-cell technology. It will also be platform-independent.

Through the Jio Money application, Reliance Jioaims to make all small shops receive cashless payments through smart phones. The company had partnered with the State Bank of India (SBI) to roll out its Jio Money digital wallet service. The application may be connected to bank accounts to allow users to enjoy the facility of anytime banking. Both Reliance Industries and SBI have given applications for a payments bank license. After the application is accepted, they will commence financial services distribution and boost the business of Reliance Jio and Reliance Retail.

Jio Money will provide plug-play integration kit for online and mobile market merchants. The merchants will enjoy services like integrated billing and payment system, accounts and bookkeeping, inventory management, customer profile, campaign management, online ordering, and credit management.

Reliance Jiois focusing on content-streaming packages, as it wishes to stand out as a digital content company, to survive the intense competition.

Future of VoLTE

Industry experts are of the opinion that Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) is the next big thing in the Indian smart phone market, after 4G devices. This technology lets customers use data over the network for voice calls.

VoLTE may be initiated on a smart phone through a chipset and a software patch. At present, just a small number of Qualcomm chipsets support VoLTE.

According to Counterpoint Technology Market Research, nearly 2% of smartphones in the country are VoLTE-upgradeable or enabled. VoLTE phones in the country are sold at twice the price of a basic 4G phone, starting from INR 10,000. Operators having spectrum in the bands of 2300 MHz band may offer VoLTE.

As per data from Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia (CLSA), 30 mobile operators in 21 countries across the globe have launched similar networks.

Reliance Jio’sVoLTE

Reliance Jio holds spectrum in 2300 MHz band in all 22 circles of India. It is thus planning to offer VoLTE across the entire country.

A note from brokerage CLSA stated, “Reliance Jio is the sole green-field launch with VoLTE while incumbent 4G will be an overlay with voice offerings on 2G or 3G. The 800 MHz spectrum trading deal (with Reliance Communications) and seamless implementation of VoLTE will be key for Reliance Jio’s voice offering.”

Reliance Retail will be introducing six new mobile phone models of 4G VoLTE in the market through its own brand, LYF. By March, the company will come up with another six models.

Ahead of Reliance Jio’s launch in December, Reliance Retail has inked distribution agreements with companies like LG, Intex, Lenovo, and Micromax for the sale of VoLTE mobile phones. Intex will be providing Reliance Jio with around 1 lakh VoLTE mobile handsets.
