Reliance Foundation to Conduct Exhibition of NasreenMohamedi’s Works

The Metropolitan Museum of Art at New York, popularly known as the Met,will soon be conducting an exhibition. The works of the late Mumbai-based artist,NasreenMohamediwill be displayed in the exhibition with the support of Reliance Foundation, headed by Nita Ambani.

Exhibition of Mohamedi’s Works

The exhibition will begin on 18th March and continue until 5th June. It is a part of the latest series of The Met’s modern and contemporary programs. The exhibition will be conducted at the notable building, created by Hungarian architect, Marcel Breuer.

The modern and contemporary section of The Met is headed by Sheena Wagstaff, who got Nita Ambani involved in the project. Both of them will be present at the grand preview, which will be held at Madison Avenue and 75th Street in Manhattan.

The Met credited Mukesh and Nita Ambani. It said that the exhibition is being conducted because of them and their Foundation. The exhibition will be co-hosted by Spain’s Queen Sofia Museum and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.

The Met is the first museum to display a compilation of the artist’s works over a period of time. There will be nearly 130 drawings, diaries, and photographs of Mohamedi.

Wagstaff aims to present a larger view of modernism across a number of geographies of art with the exhibition.

Mohamedi’s Work

Mohamedi was one of the most notable artists who emerged in post-independent period in India.

Wagstaff said that Mohamedi was a great artist but not many people know about her. Her story is very touching and shows her artistic quest. She has drawn a number of historic sources of the world. Her photography was vivid and expressive.

The Met said that, “Mohamedi created a body of work that demonstrates a singular and sustained engagement with abstraction.”

Mohamedi added to the grandeur of South Asian art with her minimalist practice. This increased the potential for narratives inglobal modernism and the scope of modern and contemporary art in the world.

The exhibition traces the conceptual complexity and visual subtlety of the artist’s oeuvre,” The Met added.

Mohamediprimarily used pencil and ink on paper. She loved to play with organic forms, dynamic lines, and delicate gridsto increase the aesthetic value of the picture.

Mohameditraveled a lot from New York to Tokyo. She was attracted by both modern as well as ancient architecture. She was inspired by the works of Bohemian-Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke and French philosopher-author, Albert Camus. She read Eastern as well as Western philosophy, and literature. Her diaries have quotes from Ghalib, Mohammad Iqbal, and Rumi.

Reliance Industries’ CSR

Reliance Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries. Reliance Industries became the topmost company in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It spent the highest amount of INR 760.58 crore for CSR initiatives in the Financial Year (FY) 2014 – 2015. In January 2016, Reliance launched its lifestyle series of smartphones under the brand of LYF , ahead of the launch of its 4G service, Jio.


An exhibition of the works of NasreenMohamedi will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York with the support of Reliance Foundation.
