The Large-Scale Impact of Jio’s Revolutionary 4G-LTE Services in India

November 30, 2016

Reliance Jio’s foray into the telecom industry elevated the standard of digital services in India to a large extent. Apart from its exemplary 4G services, its competitive pricing has disrupted the market, causing other telecom operators to restructure their tariff plans and improvise their services to match up to the standards set. Jio has already crossed expectations by servicing over 50 million subscribers within only a few months of its launch. A report by Reuters even stated that Jio has exceeded current records by drawing 1000 users to its network service every minute, which almost totals up to 6 lakh subscribers every day. This is commendable since incumbent operators took more than a decade to reach this same target.

Jio’s telecom services were launched by Mukesh Ambani at a time when the Indian Government was planning the Digital India initiative. In fact the telecom company’s massive launch helped this campaign to a large extent, by allowing people from even the most remote parts of the country to avail of affordable 4G-LTE facilities and free voice calls.

Jio’s impactful entry into the telecom sector

Much of Jio’s success has been attributed to its strategic entry into the telecom field. The company launched before the wavelength auctions were held and at a time when the festival season was around the corner. Jio also had a well-structured plan about the wavelength purchase it would be making, which thereby helped the company further. It was also able to garner a large segment of users who were keen on making festive purchases and upgrading their phones as well as their network services. The welcome offer by Jio managed to achieve this effortlessly.

Affordable services and exciting offers

Jio’s low-priced 4G services were a cause of concern for rivals, but marked a happy moment for millions across the country who received the freedom to use data without worrying about the costs. Its plans were as cost-effective as Rs. 50 for every GB. To add this benefit, Jio even made voice calls free in the country, which means users will never have to pay for making calls. This consumer-oriented approach led to a rapid increase in the sales of Jio SIM cards, with people flocking to nearby Reliance Digital Stores and other outlets to get a hold of the same.

Satisfied customers and anxious competitors

Jio’s welcome offer played a very important role in helping the company build its customer base. The offer entails free unlimited data and calling services for three months till the end of 2016. What further boosted the number of Jio customers was the launch of smart phones by the company, under the brand LYF. This appealed to customers as the devices were of an excellent build-quality yet reasonably priced. Jio’s free add-on services are also expected to create a stir in the market and raise the bar for competitors.

Additionally, Reliance Jio has a range of applications including MyJio, JioTV, and many others are gaining popularity among users. In fact, many like MyJio, JioCinema, and JioNet are leading applications on the Google Play Store.

Reliance Jio Partners with Hong Kong-Based DMX Technologies

November 22, 2016

The digital arm of Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Reliance Jio is the most recent entrant into the Indian telecom market. Serving as more than just a network service provider, the company is referred to as the world’s largest start-up.

Services offered by Jio include an exclusive range of flagship applications, 4G LTE-enabled smart phones, telecom facilities, and hotspot devices. By diversifying its services, Jio aims to digitize the lives of millions of Indians. The company’s long-term aim is to introduce the concept of a digital life to the masses with the help of smart appliances, applications, and services.

Reliance Jio also plans to install 45,000 mobile towers additionally, which will result in expenditure worth INR 1 lakh crore. In order to manage its utility services and reduce costs, the company has even partnered with Hong Kong-based technology giant, DMX Technologies.

DMX Technologies

DMX Technologies initiated a pilot run in the year 2014 when it showcased EverestIMS, which focused on IT infrastructure management. The suite helps to increase a network’s resilience, facilitates agility in a business, and also reduces the operational costs involved.

Reliance Jio owns the most comprehensive spectrum coverage across the country and is a 4G operator. These are reasons why DMX Technologies believes that its software solutions can help the 4G service provider realize its potential to the optimum. DMX Technologies believes that the telecom operator’s pain point is the expense incurred due to the use of power and diesel to power Jio’s telecom towers. The business efficiency of the telecom operator is set to increase once its services are monitored and managed by DMX Technologies.

Utility management

DMX Technologies will be responsible for monitoring Reliance Jio’s mobile tower utility for a minimum of three years. The company aims to reduce the telecom provider’s operational costs across its 22 circles in the country.

Head of Operations in India for DMX Technologies, Satish Kumar, explained how the company spent almost a year in order to familiarize itself with the requirements of a 4G service provider. The deal with Reliance Jio includes custom solutions devised to serve the utility monitoring of its towers. He explained that the company’s solutions would help Reliance Jio to optimize its business efficiency. The company will then be able to track and analyze a comprehensive overview of its power consumption across all its towers in Indian telecom circles.

This partnership will be highly beneficial as the telecom operator is conducting extensive testing of its LTE-A services, which are to be launched over the upcoming months.

Reliance Jio’s LTE-A network

LTE-A refers to Long-Term Evolution Advanced technology, which is an enhanced version of LTE. This is an attempt by Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio to overtake competitor 4G-LTE networks. It plans to roll out LTE-A network in major Indian cities. This will allow its network to serve a wider user base because of the state-of-the-art technology used.

The tests are being conducted in 16 different telecom circles, where Reliance Jio was granted access to the 10 MHz spectrum in a recent auction. To supplement this network, additional flagship smart phones that are compatible with the network service will also be introduced soon.

With respect to connectivity options, the device supports 4G LTE like all the other LYF models. It is also compatible with USB 2.0, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS. The phone is also built to support the USB OTG feature.

Flagship feature phones by Reliance Jio

Although many Jio smart phones are entry-level ones that cater to first-time data users, the price may be a barrier to millions residing in the country. In order to counter the same, the company is gearing up to introduce a line-up of feature phones under the Jio brand. Feature phones provide Internet accessibility but lack the advanced features offered by the latest smart phones in the market. Retailing around the Rs. 1,000 bracket, these 4G-compatible devices will have inbuilt Jio features. The phones are also expected to have quality front cameras, which will enable seamless video calling. The devices will be offered with the Jio 4G welcome offer, which lets individuals enjoy free services for a stipulated period of time.

In order to widen its extensive user base that currently amounts to more than 24 million, Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio is launching new devices and will soon introduce flagship feature phones. These are aimed at exploring the market segments that are relatively untapped by smart phone manufacturers and service providers. A majority of the Indian population resides in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, wherein calling is the only feature that is extensively used. Advanced Jio feature phones and the welcome offer will help encourage such consumers to try the company’s digital offerings and join the digital revolution.
