Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio Infocomm has placed an order for 4G smart phones. As the first part of the order, the pan-India 4G operator will acquire20 million smart phones from mobile vendors and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) for its LYF brand.

Reliance Jio Smart Phones

Reliance Jio’s LYF brand smart phones are created to offer world-class user experience through 4G services. In addition to being 4G-enabled, Reliance Jio smart phones will have features like Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE), High-Definition (HD) Voice, Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi), and HD Video Calling. These are aimed to offer a new digital life experience to the customers.

VoLTEwill allow Reliance Jio to manage voice calls over LTE networks. The calls will thus be supported with HD voice clarity and enhanced call connectivity. VoWi-Fi will let the calls to be switched from mobile network to Wi-Fi. This will help users in areas where there is a weak cellular coverage.

Industry experts predict that after 4G, VoLTE is set to be the next big revolution in the Indian smartphone market. Currently, only 2% of smart phones are VoLTE- enabled or upgradable. But, these figures are bound to shoot up in a couple of years. The benefits offered by VoLTE will increase its demand in the market, while prices will come down with the increase in sales.

Reliance Retail’s Partnerships

Reliance Retail has partnered with a number of smart phone manufacturers, including LG, Lenovo, YU, Micromax, Apple, and ZTE, among others. These companies will be making 4G LTE smartphones for Reliance Jio.

LG has already launched two 4G LTE smartphones in India. These are LG Spirit LTE and LG G4 Stylus 4G,both having VoLTEand VoWi-Fi capabilities. Additionally, Lenovo has launched its Vibe Shot, which is also a 4G LTE model.

YU Televenturesrecently announced that it will be launching VoLTE phones like YUPHORIA, YUNIQUE,and YUREKA Plus under its partnership with Reliance Retail. Reliance Jio to launch Jio Money by Mid-December

December 3, 2015

The telecom arm of Reliance Industries, Reliance Jio Infocomm is set to roll out its digital wallet service in mid-December.

Jio Money Digital Wallet Service

The Mukesh Ambani-led company introduced its digital wallet service recently, at the eIndia Summit, held in Mumbai. The company revealed that Jio Money is supported with 4G small-cell technology. It will also be platform-independent.

Through the Jio Money application, Reliance Jioaims to make all small shops receive cashless payments through smart phones. The company had partnered with the State Bank of India (SBI) to roll out its Jio Money digital wallet service. The application may be connected to bank accounts to allow users to enjoy the facility of anytime banking. Both Reliance Industries and SBI have given applications for a payments bank license. After the application is accepted, they will commence financial services distribution and boost the business of Reliance Jio and Reliance Retail.

Jio Money will provide plug-play integration kit for online and mobile market merchants. The merchants will enjoy services like integrated billing and payment system, accounts and bookkeeping, inventory management, customer profile, campaign management, online ordering, and credit management.

Reliance Jiois focusing on content-streaming packages, as it wishes to stand out as a digital content company, to survive the intense competition.

Future of VoLTE

Industry experts are of the opinion that Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) is the next big thing in the Indian smart phone market, after 4G devices. This technology lets customers use data over the network for voice calls.

VoLTE may be initiated on a smart phone through a chipset and a software patch. At present, just a small number of Qualcomm chipsets support VoLTE.

According to Counterpoint Technology Market Research, nearly 2% of smartphones in the country are VoLTE-upgradeable or enabled. VoLTE phones in the country are sold at twice the price of a basic 4G phone, starting from INR 10,000. Operators having spectrum in the bands of 2300 MHz band may offer VoLTE.

As per data from Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia (CLSA), 30 mobile operators in 21 countries across the globe have launched similar networks.

Reliance Jio’sVoLTE

Reliance Jio holds spectrum in 2300 MHz band in all 22 circles of India. It is thus planning to offer VoLTE across the entire country.

A note from brokerage CLSA stated, “Reliance Jio is the sole green-field launch with VoLTE while incumbent 4G will be an overlay with voice offerings on 2G or 3G. The 800 MHz spectrum trading deal (with Reliance Communications) and seamless implementation of VoLTE will be key for Reliance Jio’s voice offering.”

Reliance Retail will be introducing six new mobile phone models of 4G VoLTE in the market through its own brand, LYF. By March, the company will come up with another six models.

Ahead of Reliance Jio’s launch in December, Reliance Retail has inked distribution agreements with companies like LG, Intex, Lenovo, and Micromax for the sale of VoLTE mobile phones. Intex will be providing Reliance Jio with around 1 lakh VoLTE mobile handsets.

Reliance Jio to offer MiFi Devices

October 5, 2015

The telecom arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries,Reliance Jio Infocomm, is preparing to roll out its fourth-generation (4G) services towards the end of 2015. The company will also be offering portable devices known as MiFi or mobile Wi-Fi.

Reliance Jio’s MiFi devices

MiFi devices will act as hotspots and enable 4G non-compatible devices to enjoy the speeds of 4G. Reliance Jio will provide the devices at low rates. Besides, it will also be selling 4G-enabled handsets at affordable prices. It is already in talks with a number of mobile phone manufacturers for the same and has also given an order to Intex Technologies for the supply of 1 lakh 4G-enabled mobile phones. Reliance Jio is taking these steps to attract heavy data users and subscribers from rival companies.

MiFi devices will play a significant role in Reliance Jio’s plan of building a high-speed 4G ecosystem, even without 4G-enabled or Long Term Evolution (LTE) handsets. Buying new handsets will require users to invest more, which is precisely why experts believe that Reliance Jio will heavily promote the LTE hotspot devices to expand its market. Additionally, the company may also give bundled offers to enhance the penetration of LTE handsets.

Currently, most mobile data users do not have 4G-enabled handsets despite the fact that the rates of such phones have fallen as low as INR 5000. A single MiFi device connects 10 devices at a time. Its market price is nearly INR 3000. Sandip Agarwal, a telecom analyst at Edelweiss Securities predicts that Reliance Jio will halve the price and may offer these devices at around INR 1,500, as a part of its market strategy.

4G services are high-speed data services that enable users to download music videos or movies in a matter of minutes. Speeds offered through 4G services are much higher as compared to the popular third-generation (3G) services. Many telecom operators in the country are relying on the demand for high-speed networks to boost their profits.

Views of analysts

Analysts suggested that the data volume of Bharti Airtel will increase 11.3 times from the Financial Year (FY) 2014 – 2015 to FY 2019 – 2020 with a compounded annual growth rate of 65.1%, while that of Idea Cellular will increase 12.2 times in the same period, with a compounded annual growth rate of 62.3%. Currently, heavy data users are subscribers of Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone. Experts predict that the entry of Reliance Jio will heavily impact the business of many major telecom operators.

Agarwal said, “Of course it (Reliance Jio) will target a high incremental market share gain by helping to create a viable ecosystem of low-end LTE phones.”He estimated that by the end of FY 2015 – 2016, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Vodafone’s 3G subscriber base will touch 83 million users. “Reliance Jio will specifically target this segment and may subsidise MiFi devices to ensure attractive value proposition for customers. By 2019 – 2020, Reliance Jio will target shifting 25% of incumbents’ 3G data subscriber base to its network,” he added.

Reliance Jio will be offering portable MiFi devices to enable non-4G compatible devices run at the speeds of 4G.

Reliance Jio gives 4G-enabled Mobile Phones Order to Intex

September 24, 2015

Reliance JioInfocomm, the telecom arm of the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, is preparing itself for a commercial launch of its services in December, this year. The company is in talks with many handset manufacturers to promote affordable 4G handsets across the country.

Order given to Intex

Reliance Jio placed an order with Delhi based-Intex Technologies to supply 1 lakh 4G-enabled handsets. The mobile phone manufacturer will deploy its first shipment in October, consisting of 20,000 mobile phones. Reliance Jio was in talks with many mobile phone manufacturers, including Apple, Micromax and Samsung. Intex was the first to bag an order.

To meet the requirements and terms stated by Reliance Jio, Intex came up with a 4G-enabled phone having voice over long-term evolution (VoLTE) technology. Generally, 4G-handsets do not have VoLTE technology, but this technology is necessary for Reliance Jio services and for its network to work on the handsets. An industry expert informed that voice calling under Reliance Jio will not be possible without the VoLTE network.

VoLTE technology is found in iPhone 6 and high-end and expensive Android phones. It offers superior voice quality and reduces the cost of setting up and maintaining the network. In addition, it is completely IP-based, unlike GSM.

A spokesperson of Intex also revealed that the Reliance Jio mobile phones are below the range of Rs. 10,000. However, the telecom company will decide the final selling price. Reliance Jio will be responsible for the distribution of the mobile phones, while the handsets will be sold under the brand name of Intex.

As per first quarter reports of Financial Year 2015 -2016 from the global market research company, International Data Corporation, Intex is the third largest smartphone company in India. It has an 11% market share. The first two companies are Samsung and Micromax with 23% and 17% market shares respectively.

Motorola’s association with Reliance Retail

Motorola, owned by the Chinese company, Lenovo announced that it will sell its phone on popular e-commerce websites. To shoot the offline sale, it will be using large-format stores of Reliance Retail. It will begin its sale from large cities and metros.

Earlier, Motorola used Flipkart exclusively to sell its phones. It has announced these steps to increase its customer reach. Chen Xudong, Chairman of Motorola Mobility operation board said that people in India still largely rely on offline channels and hence the company has decided to take such a step.

Reliance Jio’s first 4G handset in the country was the recently launched, Lenovo Vibe Shot. The device is photography oriented and is priced at Rs. 19,999. The phone carries Reliance Jio’s branding and has many built-in applications like Jio Experience, Jio Friends, and Jio Drive, among others. The phone is set to capture the upper-mid segment of the smartphone market in India.

Lenovo Vibe Shot has a 5-inches screen, with full-HD resolution display. Its primary camera is 16 megapixels and it is endowed with features like optical image stabilization and a triple-LED dual tone flash. The secondary camera is 8 megapixels.
